Anaesthetists are medical specialists who have completed a minimum of 6 years at medical school, a further 2 years as a junior doctor in a hospital, a minimum of 5 years specialised training in anaesthesia as a registrar with senior doctor supervision. During this training period they have to pass two exams set by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
Specialist anaesthetist have a minimum of 12 years of study and training before they are able to practice as specialist anaesthetists New Zealand.
